Waikiki Family Friendly Activities

As new parents, we have been on a mission to find fun, outdoorsy, accessible, and kid and baby-friendly activities on our beloved island. Waikiki is a very family-friendly destination, offering a perfect blend of fun and relaxation for all ages. The calm, shallow waters along its iconic beaches make it an ideal spot for children to safely enjoy the ocean. The area is brimming with family-oriented activities, from water sports like snorkeling and paddleboarding, to fun attractions like the Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium. The scenic Kapiolani Park offers wide spaces for picnics and play, while nearby family-friendly restaurants cater to diverse palates. With an abundance of activities suitable for all ages, and the welcoming spirit of the local culture, Waikiki is the perfect place for a family friendly destination.

Please keep in mind that these recommendations work great for our family, but there are tons of great resources to find what’s most suitable for yours. Browse a complete list of things to do in Waikiki here.

  • Waimea Valley Nature Walk & Waterfall

Waimea Valley Nature Walk & Waterfall – this gorgeous botanical garden/sanctuary is tucked away on Oahu’s North Shore, right across the road from Waimea Bay beach park. It has a great restaurant, coffee shop, bar and gift shop that preface its beautiful botanical garden. The garden walk is a paved, affordable, and extremely accessible journey through the garden that ends at a waterfall/swimming area with lifejackets and lifeguards. In our opinion, a GREAT option for families of all ages and sizes.

  • Waikiki Zoo

Waikiki Zoo – this zoo is a quaint, cute, and charming version of its mainland counterparts. It is small, but also affordable and right at the end of Waikiki towards Diamond Head.

  • Waikiki Aquarium

Waikiki Aquarium – like the zoo, it is small but charming with touch-and-feel tide pools and a great location across from the zoo at the east end of Waikiki, towards Diamond Head.

  • Byodo-In Temple

Byodo-In Temple – located about 35 minutes by car from Waikiki Beach, this Japanese temple is a very cool experience, though it does command quiet visitors.

  • Hilton Hawaiian Bay

Hilton Hawaiian Bay – this public access beach park is located off Ala Moana Blvd, right in front of Hilton Hawaiian Village. With plentiful shade trees and a separate, protected bay from the ocean, it’s great for small kids and families. Parking is also very cheap and a very close walk.

  • Wet N Wild Waterpark

Wet N Wild Waterpark – pricey and small, this is more of a local family activity than one for visitors. However, it is Oahu’s only waterpark, so we figured it should make the list!
